Hogwarts Legacy Smashes Twitch’s Single-Player Game Record with 1.28 Million Viewers

Hogwarts Legacy, the highly-anticipated open-world RPG set in the Harry Potter universe, has taken the Twitch charts by storm, shattering records and captivating audiences. Developer Avalanche Software recently announced that the game reached a peak concurrent viewership of 1.28 million on Twitch. This impressive milestone solidifies Hogwarts Legacy as the number one single-player game on Twitch during its launch period, surpassing the previous records set by Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring, the 2022 Game of the Year winner.

Currently, Hogwarts Legacy is available for a 72-hour early access period for those who pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition. The global launch is scheduled for later tonight. The incredible viewership numbers on Twitch, combined with its high position on Steam’s most wishlisted titles, showcase the immense hype and anticipation that has surrounded Hogwarts Legacy since its gameplay footage leaked back in 2018. According to Gamesight, a performance metrics website cited by Kotaku, Valorant, a multiplayer FPS title, currently holds the first position on Twitch with a peak viewership of 1.7 million during its launch period. This was partly achieved through a Riot Games campaign that offered viewers early access to the game in exchange for watching participating streamers.

Despite ranking third on Twitch’s viewership chart, Hogwarts Legacy has generated the most traffic for a single-player game launch, outperforming even Cyberpunk 2077, which faced technical and performance issues upon release. Notably, popular Twitch streamer Félix “xQc” Lengyel attracted over 108,000 live viewers when he streamed Hogwarts Legacy earlier this week.

Hogwarts Legacy has also achieved tremendous success on Steam, amassing an impressive concurrent player count of 489,139, making it one of the platform’s most successful early access launches. Games analyst Benji-Sales tweeted that this figure represents the second-highest player peak in history for any paid, single-player game, surpassing the peak player count of 2015’s Fallout 4. While it falls behind Cyberpunk 2077’s one million mark, it should be noted that Elden Ring, which secured second place, offers a multiplayer PvP and summoning element, thus setting Hogwarts Legacy apart as the top-performing single-player game. Elden Ring’s peak was 953,426 concurrent players.

However, despite its success, Hogwarts Legacy has faced challenges with streamers trying to broadcast the game. Controversial remarks made by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling regarding the transgender community have sparked backlash from the LGBTQ+ community, which has infiltrated discussions around Hogwarts Legacy leading up to its launch. Although the developer has stated that Rowling was not involved in the game’s creation, some fans are boycotting it due to the author still earning royalties from the Harry Potter universe she created. A vocal minority of this group has taken to Twitch, berating streamers who choose to play Hogwarts Legacy. This even prompted web developer Sam Gibbs to create a watchdog website that monitored whether a particular Twitch streamer played the game.

Hogwarts Legacy will officially launch tonight at 12am IST (midnight) on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The PS4 and Xbox One versions are set for an April 4 release, while the Nintendo Switch version will be available on July 25.
