Hi-Fi Rush Developer Addresses Concerns About Xbox Exclusivity, Denies Halting Platforms Post-Acquisition

Hi-Fi Rush, a game that took the gaming world by storm in early 2023, made its debut exclusively on Xbox and PC. However, according to game director John Johanas, there were no initial plans to release the game on other platforms before Microsoft acquired publisher Bethesda Softworks. Johanas shared in an interview with GameSpot during Anime Expo 2023 that the team was unsure about the platforms to launch on when the Microsoft acquisition happened. But then, they decided it was an easy choice to go with Xbox. Johanas clarified that they did not have a working version for other platforms that they just put on hold. Rather, the decision to launch exclusively on Xbox was made during the development process.

One significant development in the story is Microsoft’s hands-off approach after acquiring Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax in 2021. According to Johanas, there were no changes to the game due to Microsoft’s influence. The game was already solidified at that point, and Microsoft provided no feedback to alter the game. Johanas mentioned that everyone who saw the game thought it looked cool, so there were no major issues or adjustments required.

The only concern Tango Gameworks faced when working with Microsoft was finding the right timing for the game’s release, to avoid overlap with other titles. Johanas also explained how being on Game Pass benefited the team, as Hi-Fi Rush offered a completely different experience compared to their previous projects. Launching the game as a surprise on Day One on Game Pass prevented players from scrutinizing or criticizing the game in detail, allowing the team to focus on delivering a unique and enjoyable experience.

Recently, there has been discussion surrounding Microsoft’s exclusivity of games on Xbox. The concern arises from Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda and the resulting exclusivity of games like Starfield. However, in late 2022, Microsoft pledged to keep Call of Duty multiplatform if the Activision Blizzard deal went through. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) trail surrounding the deal has raised concerns about the growing exclusivity within the gaming industry.

Hi-Fi Rush made a surprise debut in January and has since received updates, including a new challenge mode. Please note that any products mentioned in this article were chosen independently by our editors, and GameSpot may receive a share of the revenue if you make a purchase from our site.
