This announcement closely follows a similar initiative by Adobe, which aims to introduce IP indemnity for businesses utilizing its generative AI platform, Firefly.

Shutterstock’s enticing offer of full indemnification for the license and use of generative AI images is designed to shield companies from potential legal disputes. This move is not surprising considering that Shutterstock’s AI-generated images do not undergo the same rigorous review and vetting process as traditional stock videos and photos on their platform. Without careful scrutiny and skillful use of graphic design software to edit potentially litigious images, businesses could find themselves entangled in legal battles. This undermines the two key benefits of using these tools: speed and cost-efficiency.
