Here’s how Instagram plans to protect your DMs from spammers, unknown users

Instagram is taking strong measures to combat unwanted messages and spam in your DMs. Now, individuals you don’t follow will only be able to send one message, and they can only send more messages if you accept their DM request. These messages can only contain text, so senders cannot send photos, videos, or voice messages.

With these new restrictions, strangers cannot repeatedly message you or send unsolicited pictures, addressing a prevalent issue where women often received unsolicited pictures in their direct messages.

Cindy Southworth, who oversees Women’s Safety at Meta, stated that the goal is to provide individuals with a sense of confidence and control while accessing their inboxes. Therefore, Instagram is experimenting with new features that restrict receiving images, videos, and multiple messages from unknown individuals until the message request is accepted.

Previously, Instagram allowed users to send unlimited messages to anyone, even if they didn’t follow them or accept their message requests, which could be overwhelming. Now, it has limited messaging to one message until the request is accepted, preventing users from being bombarded with spam.

Users can check their message requests by clicking the corresponding button in the DM tab. However, this only applies if your privacy settings require connection requests to message you. If not, this restriction will not apply to your inbox.

In addition to the new messaging restrictions, Instagram has implemented other features to protect users from spam and offensive messages. The “Hidden Words” filter blocks abusive DM requests, “Limits” prevents sudden spikes in unwanted comments, and “Restrict” discreetly restricts users without blocking them.

Instagram is also introducing updated parental controls, which include safeguards for messaging. Parents can now see how many friends their kids have in common with their followers or someone they are following, and teens will receive a notification if they are browsing Reels late at night.
