Hades expert is the first to defeat the ‘impossible’ max-heat run

Hades expert Jade ‘AngeL1C’ has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first Hades player to complete the game on its most challenging setting without the use of mods or prior seeding. This feat was previously believed to be nearly impossible. Hades, an extraordinary roguelike game, took the gaming world by storm upon its release in September 2020, after spending two years in early access. Since then, its top players have been relentlessly striving to conquer its ultimate challenge.

Just over a week ago, Hades YouTuber and Twitch streamer Dan ‘Haelian’ posted a video titled, “Why no one has beaten the max heat in Hades or probably ever will.” He offers an explanation as to why completing a run with every single ‘heat’ modifier, which increases the game’s difficulty, has long been considered an insurmountable undertaking.

To reach the maximum tier, enemies become stronger, faster, deal more damage, and appear in larger numbers. Each boss also appears in an empowered state with new and more dangerous moves. In contrast, the player is stripped of the powerful Mirror Talents that enhance Zagreus’s abilities, only receives a single random Boon instead of a choice of three, has to sacrifice a Boon after each region, and must play on Hell mode, which removes Zagreus’s temporary invulnerability after being hit. Additionally, they only have five minutes per area, totaling 20 minutes to complete the run.

These factors alone make the run extremely challenging, with even top players considering surpassing 60 heat to be an unrealistic feat. Furthermore, in Hades, upgrades appear randomly, a situation made even more difficult due to the ‘Approval Process’ modifier, which grants only a single random Boon instead of a choice of three. Therefore, skill alone is not enough; extraordinary luck is also required.

Enter AngeL1C. This Hades challenge runner and speedrunner accepted the gauntlet thrown down by Haelian and rose to the occasion. Not only did she manage to surpass the seemingly impossible challenge, but she also did so with a comfortable 36 seconds remaining on the clock. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that she accomplished it after just an hour of attempts, continuously resetting the run to have the perfect start. As Jade herself puts it, this meant “51 minutes of attempts to get luck that is arguably unachievable in thousands of hours.”

Jade’s final setup included using the Aspect of Zeus Shield, which spins like a gold Beyblade when the special attack is activated. This shield is favored because it allows the player to damage enemies while utilizing the Shield’s block ability for protection. Jade acquired the Explosive Return upgrade, which causes the shield to detonate and damage surrounding enemies when caught, along with the Zeus upgrade that makes lightning bolts strike foes during the spinning attack. Additionally, she utilized the Jolted effect, causing shocked enemies to harm themselves when they attack.

This is truly one of the most impressive and astonishing feats in gaming history—a challenge that the community had collectively deemed impossible without modding the game for a perfect loadout, a feat that only a select few players have accomplished.

For me, the most memorable moment in the video is when AngeL1C obtains the ‘two sack.’ This stroke of luck, combined with the game’s randomization, requires acquiring a key item during the second of potentially five challenge rooms in the final zone. Without this stroke of luck, the run could have easily been lost. When the ‘two sack’ appears, Jade pauses the game for a significant amount of time to collect herself. This is the run.

Haelian comments on the video simply with the words, “HOLY CONGRATS”—a sentiment that encapsulates the awe and admiration for Jade’s achievement. Another highly upvoted comment from user ‘unovarydrake’ states, “Congrats on being the only person to beat Hades.” It is quite possible that Jade is now the only individual to ever accomplish this feat. However, as today demonstrates, one should never say never.
