Government Said to Likely Give More Time to Foreign Laptop Companies to Apply for Licences

The government is expected to grant an extended deadline for companies to apply for import licenses for laptops and other devices, thus prolonging the import restrictions. According to sources from the IT Ministry, this decision will come as a relief to companies.

It is likely that the timelines will be extended by approximately one month, and an announcement from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) regarding this matter can be anticipated in the near future.

The sources further mentioned that companies will have more time to submit their license applications, and they assured that shipments currently in transit will not encounter any issues.

According to the IT Ministry sources, the government implemented the import restrictions on laptops, tablets, and specific types of computers due to “security concerns.” These restrictions will enable the government to closely monitor the origin of these products.

On August 3, the Indian government made the decision to impose a licensing requirement for the import of laptops, tablets, and personal computers in order to boost domestic manufacturing. Unlike the previous regulations, which allowed companies to freely import laptops, the new rule will require a special license for these products, similar to the restrictions imposed on TV shipments in 2020.

The government did not provide a specific reason for this move in its notification on Thursday. However, this decision could potentially impact technology companies such as Apple, Dell, and Samsung, and compel them to increase local manufacturing.

Shortly after the announcement, it was reported that Apple, Samsung Electronics, and HP are among the major companies halting new imports of laptops and tablets to India.
