Gord is a unique blend of roleplaying, real-time strategy, and colony simulation set in a dark fantasy world. The game presents the challenge of surviving in a treacherous environment, reminiscent of those miserable towns in fantasy RPGs. However, despite its promising premise, Gord falls short in delivering a captivating gameplay experience.

The story revolves around a kingdom on the verge of unifying the south and conquering the monster-infested north. As a representative of the southern king, your task is to establish outposts called gords in the dangerous wastelands and earn the trust of a local tribe. The concept of making tough choices and facing the consequences seemed intriguing, but unfortunately, the game fails to deliver on this promise.

The narrative, while based on an interesting dark fantasy world with captivating character designs and plots, lacks flair and fails to engage players. The lore is mostly presented through a journal, with pseudo-archaic language that adds little value or memorability. The voice performance of the king’s emissary stands out, but it’s not enough to salvage the overall mediocre storytelling.

In terms of gameplay, Gord’s mechanics are uninspired and shallow. You are limited to a small village within the gord, where every building must be constructed for protection. However, the placement of buildings becomes a mere Tetris-like puzzle, as there are no real challenges or strategic decisions involved. The game lacks the complexity and depth of recent base-building defense games like They Are Billions or Northgard.

The colony simulation aspect of the game also falls short. There is a limited variety of buildings and resources, making the gameplay repetitive and predictable. The campaign consists of short scenarios that require players to follow the same build order repeatedly, with minimal variation. This lack of diversity hinders the overall enjoyment and fails to create a compelling experience.

The RTS-style units, represented by villagers, have basic meters for health, sanity, and faith. While sanity adds an interesting element to gameplay, health and faith are simply points to manage. The villagers’ skills and personalities offer little impact, as their bonuses or penalties are rarely noticeable. Overall, the game lacks the depth and complexity needed to create engaging characters and challenging gameplay.

Despite its claims of being a survival game, Gord is not particularly difficult, even on the highest difficulties. The main challenge lies in micromanaging the villagers’ movements and ensuring their meters are kept in check. This aspect of the game feels like dark fantasy babysitting rather than true survival gameplay. In contrast, other colony-building RTS games, such as Stranded: Alien Dawn, offer more nuanced character management and combat mechanics.

Combat in Gord is underwhelming, where battles often end quickly with minimal input from the player. While there are some unique enemy behaviors to exploit, the tactical depth is lacking compared to other RTS games. The monsters themselves are not interesting to fight, and the battles can feel repetitive and unengaging.

To make matters worse, Gord’s user interface is backward and confusing, making it difficult to navigate and understand the game’s mechanics. This lack of user-friendliness adds unnecessary frustration to an already mediocre gameplay experience.

In conclusion, while Gord presents an intriguing concept and a dark fantasy world, it falls short in delivering an engaging and satisfying gameplay experience. The shallow mechanics, repetitive gameplay, and lackluster storytelling make it difficult to immerse oneself in the game. Gord fails to live up to its potential as a unique blend of roleplaying, real-time strategy, and colony simulation.
