Google’s first foldable smartphone has only been on the market for a week, but reports are already emerging of issues with the Google Pixel Folds. Users have complained about their Pixel Fold displays breaking, with some even providing photo evidence.
One user noticed a bright pink line on the inner screen of their device after only a few hours of use. Another user posted on Reddit about small dents on the inner screen area of their device. Although this user hasn’t experienced any problems with the screen, it is still a cause for concern. Another Pixel Fold owner reported problems with the screen protector, including peeling and scratches.
Fortunately, one user was able to get a replacement after contacting Google about cracks on their Pixel Fold screen. Google responded within one day and confirmed that it was a defective display.
Why do foldable displays break?
Foldable screens are fascinating but fragile. Unlike regular phone screens, they lack a layer of glass for protection. The folding displays use Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) which is thin enough to allow the screen to fold. However, there is a plastic screen protector in place to provide some protection.
If any debris or dust gets under the protector or the glass, it can damage the screen. When the device is closed, these particles can press against the screen and cause it to break.
Pixel Fold owners are not the only ones experiencing issues. The first-generation Galaxy Z Fold from Samsung also faced problems with its inner foldable display, resulting in a delayed launch.
In response to the user complaints, Google spokesperson Alex Moriconi told The Verge, “We recommend anyone having an issue reach out to support to investigate.”
