Google Removes Popular Indian Apps Like Shaadi.com From Play Store, All Details

Google removes popular Indian apps like Shaadi.com, 99acres, BharatMatrimony, and Kuku FM from its Play Store due to a dispute over service fees.

In a move that has sparked concerns and caused confusion among users, Google has begun removing apps from the Play Store belonging to several prominent Indian companies. This action, initiated on March 1, 2024, stems from a complex dispute over service fees charged by Google for in-app purchases and highlights the ongoing tensions between app developers and the tech giant. As these popular apps become inaccessible to millions of users, understanding the reasons behind the removals and the potential consequences becomes crucial.

Apps Delisted from Play Store

While Google hasn’t officially revealed the names of the affected companies, popular apps like Naukri.com, 99acres, BharatMatrimony, Shaadi.com, Truly Madly, QuackQuack, Stage, Balaji Telefilms’ ALTT, and Kuku FM are among those removed from the Play Store. These apps cater to diverse sectors, including online matrimony, job search, real estate, dating, and entertainment.

Why Google Removed These Apps?

The crux of the issue lies in the service fees that Google charges for in-app purchases. Following an order from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to revise its fee structure, Google implemented a new system charging developers between 11% and 26% on in-app transactions. This replaced the previous fee structure, which ranged from 15% to 30%.
