Google India Accused by Epic Games of Non-Compliance with Antitrust Orders

Epic Games is taking legal action against Google in an Indian tribunal for failing to adhere to certain parts of an antitrust directive. The gaming company claims that Google is not hosting its app store on the Google Play Store app, and is therefore not complying with the directive. Epic’s legal claim is the latest to affect Google’s Alphabet Inc unit in India. In February, Epic lodged a filing with an appeals tribunal in New Delhi, alleging that Google has not obeyed a section of the Competition Commission of India directive that requires it to host third-party app stores on Play Store. Epic is seeking an order to force Google to comply with the ruling.

Google lost a legal battle with the Competition Commission of India in December, after which it stated it would make changes to its Android business model. The changes include discontinuing the practice of requiring companies to pre-install Google apps such as Chrome and YouTube. However, Epic’s filing argues that Google’s failure to comply with the directive has adversely affected its Epic Games Store app, which the company has claimed it is exploring launching on Google Play Store. Epic is also campaigning against both Apple and Google for applying high app store commissions, and has 9.5 million users in India.

In response to Epic’s filing, a Google spokesperson stated that it has submitted plans for its compliance plan to the Competition Commission of India and will continue to follow the legal process in India. The case is likely to be heard in the coming days.
