Google: Google may be working on an AI writing tool for ChromeOS

During the I/O 2023 event, Google made an exciting announcement stating that its products and services will gradually incorporate artificial intelligence capabilities. After successfully implementing AI-powered features in Gmail, Docs, Slides, and more, Google might be working on bringing AI writing and editing capabilities to Chromebooks.

According to 9to5mac, Google has been working on a project with multiple codenames, including “Orca,” “Mako,” and “Manta.” The report states that “Orca” will primarily appear in the right-click menu of ChromeOS when editing text.

When selected, “Orca” will open the “Mako” UI in a bubble overlay on the screen.

So what exactly does “Mako” do? According to the report, “Mako” has three main tasks: requesting rewrites of a specific piece of text, offering preset text queries, and inserting the rewritten text wherever the user is typing. The AI rewriting process does not occur locally on the user’s PC; instead, “Manta” sends the original text and prompt to Google’s servers, which then return the AI-enhanced version. Users will be required to provide consent before this process takes place.

Furthermore, by integrating generative AI directly into ChromeOS, users will have access to improved text in almost any application. Although there is no specific launch date for this feature, it may be introduced with ChromeOS version 118, expected to be released in mid-October.

It is worth mentioning that earlier this year, Microsoft announced Copilot for Windows, which is similar to Bing Chat. Copilot assists users in performing day-to-day tasks such as enabling dark mode or searching for content from a sidebar that can be accessed at any time.
