Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), the national nodal agency that deals with computer security incidents in the country, has issued a warning for Google Chrome users in India. Users have been asked to update their internet browsers. The ‘High’ severity rating warning was issued on March 8 for “Google Chrome versions prior to 122.0.6261.111/.112 for Windows and Mac” and 122.0.6261.111 and earlier for Linux systems.
The multiple vulnerabilities were highlighted in the “CIVN-2024-0085” version that could have allowed remote attackers to execute arbitrary codes and compromise a system with a Denial of Service (DoS) condition. This security flaw was due to the FedCM and V8 components.

“Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Google Chrome, which could be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause a Denial of Service (DoS) condition on the targeted system,” the vulnerability note said.
The “Use-after-free error” in FedCM can allow bad actors to manipulate the memory and execute codes. On the other hand, the vulnerabilities of the Javascript V8 engine relate to “Out of bounds memory access and inappropriate implementation”. These flaws could allow attackers to frame specially crafted web pages on a targeted system.
“Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause a Denial of Service (DoS) condition on the targeted system,” In simpler terms, attackers could have managed to steal data, crash the browser or take control of the system. It could also allow users to install malware on the affected systems.

However, the good part is that an update is available to solve the problem. To update the internet browser, click the three-dot icon at the top right. Scroll to the bottom and click ‘Help’. Head to the ‘About Google Chrome’ section, and Chrome will automatically check for updates.
