Google Assistant disappeared from a lot of smartwatches with the arrival of the Wear OS 3 update. Only the Pixel Watch and Samsung’s newer Galaxy Watches supported the feature. However, now you don’t have to switch brands to have Google Assistant on your wrist. Fossil is releasing an update this month that adds Assistant to Gen 6 watches running Wear OS 3. This includes Fossil’s own models as well as counterparts from Diesel, Michael Kors, and Skagen. However, please note that you’ll need to be paired with a phone running standard Android with Google apps. Android Go and many Chinese phones won’t work.
If you’re familiar with Google or Samsung wristwear, the functionality will be similar. You can activate the AI assistant by saying “Hey Google,” holding a button, or tapping a watch face complication. This feature allows you to respond to texts, control music, or perform other tasks that would normally require your phone. Unlike other alternatives, you’ll also have access to Alexa. You won’t be limited to just one ecosystem for giving voice commands.
Unfortunately, this won’t help if you have a Wear OS 3 watch from another brand like Mobvoi or Montblanc. However, Fossil is one of the most popular names in Google-powered smartwatches. Their support ensures that many more wearable owners can use Assistant and avoid dealing with a tiny screen.
If you’re new to smartwatches, you might consider waiting before making a purchase. Historically, Fossil introduces new Wear OS models in late summer. The exception was this year’s Gen 6 Wellness Edition, which was mildly upgraded in January. While there’s no information about when Gen 7 will be released or what it will include, it will likely be a significant upgrade if and when it arrives. So, it’s best not to buy Gen 6 just because Assistant is now available. This update is primarily for existing owners who lost functionality last year.
