God of War TV Series Officially Ordered at Amazon Prime Video

The highly anticipated God of War live-action series adaptation has been officially confirmed by Prime Video. Amazon had expressed interest in acquiring the rights to adapt the critically acclaimed video game franchise into a television series. Rafe Judkins, known for his work on The Wheel of Time and co-writing the Uncharted movie for Sony, will serve as the showrunner. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, the creators of The Expanse, will executive produce and write the series for Amazon.

Initially, there was no information regarding which mythology the series would be based on, whether it would be the ancient Greek or the newer Norse mythology. However, it has now been revealed that the series will follow the story beats of the award-winning 2018 reboot version, in which the protagonist, Kratos, is portrayed with a beard.

Vernon Sanders, the head of global television at Amazon Studios, expressed his excitement about the project, stating that God of War is a franchise driven by compelling characters and immersive worlds. He believes that it will captivate global audiences with its rich storytelling. Amazon is honored to collaborate with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio in this ambitious exploration of the God of War mythology.

The critically acclaimed 2018 game follows Kratos, the God of War, who has left his blood-soaked past behind after years of battling the Gods of Olympus in ancient Greece. He now resides in the Norse realm of Midgard, grieving the loss of his wife and embarking on a dangerous journey to scatter her ashes from the highest peak in the nine realms. His estranged son, Atreus, joins him on this treacherous mission, learning to survive in a harsh world while forging a bond with his father.

Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, expressed excitement about partnering with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to bring the beloved God of War franchise to both fans and new audiences in an authentic way. God of War joins the growing list of first-party PlayStation titles that will be adapted into live-action series, including Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us.

Live-action adaptations of video games have often faced criticism, with the recent Uncharted film being negatively received by critics. While it managed to earn a significant box office revenue, it lacked the action and narrative choices that fans appreciated in the game. However, there have been successful examples like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Arcane, both from Netflix, which took unique approaches to storytelling while still capturing the essence of the video games.

God of War Ragnarök, the sequel to the 2018 game, received six awards at The Game Awards 2022, including Best Performance for Christopher Judge. With the announcement of the TV series, fans are already speculating about potential casting choices. Cory Barlog, the director of the first game, even joked about casting Chris Pratt as Kratos. Pratt is currently voicing Mario in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie.

PlayStation Productions has more projects in the pipeline, including a Gran Turismo movie led by David Harbour and adaptations of the games Days Gone and Gravity Rush.

Unfortunately, there is no release window yet for the God of War series on Amazon Prime Video.
