Gameplay Trailer for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Release Date Announcement for Spider-Man 2 Expected at Summer Game Fest 2023

The Summer Game Fest, a highly anticipated video game showcase event led by veteran industry figure Geoff Keighley, was live-streamed from the YouTube theatre in Los Angeles on Thursday night. The occasion featured many up-and-coming titles, some of which were highly anticipated while others were surprise reveals and appearances. Fans were particularly excited when Nicolas Cage dropped by to unveil that he’ll be featured in Dead by Daylight. The show started with a trailer for the action-adventure platformer new Prince of Persia game, followed by a detailed look at Mortal Kombat 1, which examined the new Kameo fighters mechanic, allowing players to summon support mid-combo with a single button press.

A new trailer for the moody action game, Lies Of P, was also shown, revealing more of its combat sequences. Though originally scheduled for release on August 1, the game’s launch now arrives on September 19, and a playable demo is already available on all consoles and PC. Sam Lake of Remedy Entertainment also showed up at the event to speak more about Alan Wake II’s playable characters, existing within two different worlds. The event also included a variety of other titles for different platforms, including big reveals for titles such as Final Fantasy XVI and Diablo IV.

Our picks for the biggest announcements, reveals, and updates from the Summer Game Fest 2023 are:

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Set to be released on PS5, the highly anticipated title will hit the market in early 2024. Its detailed gameplay trailer showcased fluid combat, exploration, and story elements.

Spider-Man 2: Insomniac Games announced that the release date for the next big first-party PlayStation game will be on October 20th, with pre-orders beginning June 16th.

Mortal Kombat 1: Ed Boon introduced the beginning of a new timeline in the universe through a raw gameplay trailer, which showcased all kinds of gory Fatalities, including one that involved ripping out someone’s heart. The game has a new Kameo Fighters addition, allowing for summonable characters that can be called upon for assistance with a single button press, without interrupting your combo.

Immortals of Aveum: Comparable to EA’s Forspoken, Immortals of Aveum was shown as one of the more ‘epic’ sequences of the game wherein the hero Jak confronts Sandrak, one of the game’s key villains. The game is set to launch on July 20th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.

Lies Of P: The steampunk-ish game with Souls-like theme will release on September 19th across all platforms and is the closest a PC gamer can get to Bloodborne.

Like a Dragon: Gaiden – The Man Who Erased His Name: The latest installment of the Yakuza series sees Kazuma Kiryu’s latest character in a nameless role. The game will release on November 9th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown: Ubisoft unveiled their latest Prince of Persia game, with an arrival date on January 18th, 2024, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and Amazon Luna.
