Gameplay for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Unveils Koboh, a New Planet, and the Art of Dual-Wielding Weapons

IGN has released new gameplay footage for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, showcasing the exciting features of the game. The video provides a nine-minute glimpse into the new planet Koboh, where the protagonist Cal Kestis crash-landed at the beginning of the game. This gameplay footage highlights combat sequences against wildlife and foot soldiers, as well as improvements to the telekinetic Force skill and the ability to dual-wield weapons.

Originally scheduled for a March release, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was delayed until April 28 to ensure a polished experience. The additional time allowed developer Respawn Entertainment to refine the game and deliver a high-quality product.

The extensive gameplay footage takes viewers on a captivating journey through the rocky planet of Koboh. Cal Kestis, accompanied by his droid BD-1, surveys the area and deploys a beacon to guide his exploration. He embarks on a mission to repair his ship, encountering various challenges along the way.

Fans will recognize familiar movesets from the prequel, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, such as wall-running. However, Survivor expands upon these traversal options by introducing a grappling hook and an air-dash. The combat mechanics draw heavily from the previous game, featuring a range of droids armed with grenades and formidable guards wielding electric staffs. Notably, Cal Kestis can now dual-wield lightsabers, adding a thrilling dimension to battles. This enhancement is made possible by the addition of new stances in Star Wars: Jedi Survivor.

The Force abilities have also evolved, allowing Kestis to effortlessly lift enemies into the air and temporarily suspend them. Previously limited to pull and push abilities, Kestis now possesses powerful telekinetic skills. The gameplay footage hints at the ability to switch between two of the five available fight stances. Players can choose a lightweight dual-blade option or a heavy attack reminiscent of Kylo Ren’s crossguard style. The former stance allows Kestis to utilize the butt ends of his lightsaber to construct a long, double-edged staff for both offensive and defensive maneuvers. Additionally, the game features a finishing blow mechanic, showcasing unique kill animations depending on the enemy type, reminiscent of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

The footage also teases a thrilling fight against a miniboss, where fluid movements and strategic combat are showcased. Telekinetic abilities come into play as Kestis utilizes rocks to stagger beasts, creating combat opportunities. In addition to combat segments, there is a glimpse of stealth gameplay as Cal Kestis executes a ledge takedown and takes down another guard. The looting system relies on the assistance of the adorable droid BD-1, who unlocks crates containing new outfits and items. Similar to the original game, the world of Survivor is dotted with Meditation spots that function as save points, allowing players to restore health, upgrade skills, and progress in their journey.

Director Stig Asmussen revealed in an interview with GamesRadar that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will introduce a fast travel option and rideable creatures to enhance the traversal experience. Players will have the ability to swiftly navigate between different locations using point-to-point fast travel or rideable creatures, facilitating exploration and efficient travel.

While IGN’s gameplay footage did not delve into the fast travel system, it is plausible to assume that Meditation spots will serve as the game’s fast travel points, given their similarity to Dark Souls’ bonfires. Further details regarding the fast travel system are eagerly awaited.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is set to release on April 28 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. Fans can anticipate an immersive and action-packed experience that builds upon the beloved Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order while introducing captivating new features and gameplay mechanics.
