The topic of gender-swapped roles in remakes, reboots, and original projects often sparks divisive opinions. Gal Gadot’s upcoming Netflix blockbuster, Heart of Stone, has the potential to stir controversy.
Recently, director Tom Harper dismissed iconic male characters like James Bond, Jason Bourne, and Ethan Hunt as outdated and irrelevant. Gadot, who is both the star and producer of the film, expressed her desire to not just retell a male-centric story that has been done many times before.
In an interview with Total Film, Gadot elaborated on her decision to take on Heart of Stone and why she didn’t want it to be a mere gender-swapped role. She emphasized the importance of creating a different kind of female action character, acknowledging the inherent differences between men and women in terms of physicality and approach.
“I wanted to show a great story about a female character who is thriving in the action genre. But at the same time, how many times have they just switched gender? They take a story that is all about men and simply change it to feature a woman. To me, it was crucial for Heart of Stone to be unique because men and women are inherently different in their build and approach.”
One can’t help but wonder if Gadot is aware of the success of films like Salt, which initially featured a male protagonist but ended up casting Angelina Jolie in the lead role. However, whether that film is the exception or the rule remains to be seen. We will have to wait and see how Heart of Stone performs when it premieres on Netflix on August 11.
