While Black Knight may not always be as enthralling as it aims to be, it possesses a charmingly cartoonish quality that stands out against the grim backdrop of its dystopian premise. Adapted from a webtoon, the series draws comparisons to other South Korean dramas such as Squid Game, but a more appropriate comparison would be to the action-packed Mad Max: Fury Road. Although the special effects can be lacking and some episodes lack ambition, the series becomes truly engaging when it focuses on the uprising that threatens to change the world as its characters know it. Set in 2071 after an asteroid crash has devastated the majority of the Korean peninsula, the show follows the Knights, delivery drivers risking their lives to bring essential resources to survivors in a world defined by constant danger and toxic air. The legendary Knight 5-8, played by Kim Woo-bin, takes Kang You-seok’s scrappy Sa-wol under his wing, eventually training him to become a Knight himself and join the uprising against the corrupt forces that control society. While Black Knight isn’t always as tactful in its commentary on society as it could be, it is a well-rounded and thrilling action thriller with a sense of humor and heart. Although the technical shortcomings can be distracting, the engaging plot and dynamic action sequences make the series well worth the watch. Black Knight is now streaming on Netflix.
