Fossil announced the Wear OS-running Gen 6 smartwatch lineup back in August 2021. The company unveiled some Wellness Edition watches later but kept everyone waiting for the Gen 7, which we now learn is never coming since Fossil has confirmed it’s leaving the smartwatch business.
“As the smartwatch landscape has evolved significantly over the past few years, we have made the strategic decision to exit the smartwatch business. Fossil Group is redirecting resources to support our core strength and the core segments of our business that continue to provide strong growth opportunities for us: designing and distributing exciting traditional watches, jewelry, and leather goods under our own as well as licensed brand names,” Fossil Group’s spokesperson Amanda Castelli told The Verge.
Last month, some reports claimed Fossil would no longer release Wear OS smartwatches, and the company was also offering huge discounts on some of its smartwatches, probably to clear the inventory, so this news shouldn’t be a shocker.
That said, while Fossil is exiting the smartwatch business, the brand confirmed it will continue to keep its existing Wear OS-powered smartwatches updated “for the next few years.” Here’s hoping the updates for these watches will be devoid of bugs to offer the users a smooth experience.
