For the Sake of the MCU, ‘Secret Invasion’ Can’t Become Another ‘Eternals’

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for the finale of Secret Invasion.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has faced challenges in finding a balance between storytelling and worldbuilding since Avengers: Endgame. This has resulted in dropped plot points and a lack of coherence. Recent MCU projects have prioritized worldbuilding over storytelling, leading to loose ends and contradicting storylines, as seen in Eternals. The events of Secret Invasion have the potential to significantly impact the politics of the MCU and should be addressed in future projects to maintain coherence and relevance.

Although the series may have been lackluster, the ending of Secret Invasion completely shifts the status quo of the MCU. A few years ago, the revelation that shapeshifting Skrulls live among us would have been exciting. However, since Avengers: Endgame, the MCU has struggled with coherence, with significant plot points being inexplicably dropped. Eternals is a prime example, with a giant Celestial rising from the ocean but never being relevant again. As Marvel Studios prepares to retool the MCU and reignite fan excitement, they must avoid repeating Eternals’ mistake with Secret Invasion. Otherwise, the future of the MCU may be in jeopardy.

The MCU faces a challenge in balancing storytelling and worldbuilding. The “Infinity Saga” achieved success by blending emotionally impactful stories with clever worldbuilding. Even the weakest films, like Thor: The Dark World, still had their own self-contained stories, while dropping hints of larger crossovers. However, four years after the “Infinity Saga,” the MCU has grown so rapidly that it has lost control of the overarching story. This is evident in projects like Ant-Man: Quantumania, which prioritize setting up future installments over delivering a satisfying standalone adventure. WandaVision also suffered, with a brilliant exploration of grief marred by a messy final episode intended to tease Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Furthermore, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ignored the character growth of Wanda Maximoff, reducing her to a shallow villain. In Phases 4 and 5, there are too many loose ends and conflicting storylines. Eternals exemplifies these challenges, introducing numerous characters and teasing future adventures without confirming their return. Moreover, the film’s world-altering events have had minimal impact on the overall MCU narrative. Marvel Studios must avoid making the same mistakes with Secret Invasion, as it has the potential to redefine the politics of the MCU.

Secret Invasion concludes with the President of the United States revealing the existence of Skrulls among humans and declaring war on aliens. This triggers mass hysteria, with people forming kill squads to target suspected Skrulls, leading to the unjust killings of innocent individuals. Skrulls now face another purge, leaving tensions high and global politics in flux. Marvel Studios must ensure that these events have consequences and resonate in upcoming projects, especially those connected to the Skrulls. The Marvels and Captain America: Brave New World should address the Skrull situation on Earth, while Thunderbolts should explore how General Ross’s political ambitions relate to Secret Invasion. Additionally, Armor Wars should delve into the consequences of a Skrull replacing James “Rhodey” Rhodes. Secret Invasion is a pivotal moment for the MCU, determining whether it can regain relevance and maintain a cohesive world. If Marvel Studios repeats the mistakes made in Eternals and neglects the significant developments of the story, it will signal a decline in the MCU’s worthiness of continued attention.
