Counterpoint Research’s latest Global Foldable Smartphone Tracker and Forecast predicts that foldable smartphone shipments will reach 101.5 million in 2027, up from 78.6 million in 2026.
“Foldables are currently a niche category, but they play a crucial role for brands that want to lead in terms of innovation and maintain a strong presence in the premium market,” said Tom Kang, research director at Counterpoint Research.
Samsung and Apple are likely to dominate
The report states that Samsung and Apple will capture the largest market share, with Samsung leading the market and Apple closely following.
“Samsung and Chinese OEMs have been very active, particularly in their domestic markets, with China emerging as the largest market worldwide last year. If you want to succeed in the foldable market, you have to make it in China,” added Kang.
The report also predicts that foldable smartphones will account for 39% of all smartphone shipments in 2027. While Samsung has already released the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 smartphones, Apple has yet to announce any plans for a foldable iPhone.
“We are eagerly waiting to see what Apple does in the long term. We anticipate that 2025 could be the year for the debut of the foldable iPhone, which would further boost the growth of this segment,” noted senior analyst Jene Park.
Q1 Foldable smartphone shipments
In a recent report, Counterpoint Research revealed that the global foldable smartphone market grew by 64% year-on-year in Q1 2023, with a total of 2.5 million units sold. This growth is significant considering the 14.2% decline in the overall global smartphone market during the same period.
“Our latest Global Foldable Smartphone Preference Survey shows a strong willingness to purchase among respondents, especially among current users. This indicates that the hype surrounding foldable smartphones is legitimate,” added Park.
