Focus Shifted from PvE Hero Mode to Live Game in Overwatch 2

During a recent developer livestream outlining Overwatch 2’s future plans, executive producer Jared Neuss announced that the highly anticipated PvE Hero mode has been scrapped. This news comes as a disappointment to fans, as the PvE mode, initially revealed in 2019, was a major selling point for Overwatch 2, alongside its multiplayer casual and competitive modes. The PvE Hero mode aimed to advance the game’s lore by allowing players to team up with others and embark on various missions, similar to the popular Uprising and Retribution events from the first game.

The advertised PvE Hero mode was meant to offer an always-available mode where players could earn XP through repeated playthroughs. This would grant special buffs to their chosen hero, creating a unique RPG experience. Some of these abilities were never seen in the original Overwatch, as they were too powerful for online matchmaking and were restricted to PvE content only. However, Overwatch 2 encountered several delays, leading Blizzard to announce last year that the Hero mode would be postponed for a later release, prioritizing the game’s robust online play system instead.

During the livestream, Neuss expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in the development of the PvE experience. He stated that while there were exciting new enemies and innovative hero talents, the effort required to create a high-quality Blizzard experience was immense, with no clear end in sight. As a result, the decision was made to abandon the mode, although the team still plans to incorporate co-op experiences into their ongoing live roadmap.

The updated roadmap for Overwatch 2 includes plans for seasons 5, 6, 7, and beyond. Season 5, starting on June 13, will feature a ‘Mischief and Magic’ theme and introduce a new limited-time event called Questwatch, the annual Summer Games event, a cinematic reveal, a mini 5v5 competitive season, and a creator workshop mode. Season 6, touted as the biggest content drop, will introduce Story Missions and include a new support hero, Flashpoint mode, Hero Mastery, Firing Range, and the Overwatch Anniversary event.

Looking ahead to Season 7 and beyond, players can anticipate a new tank hero and a collaboration event, marking the second year of Blizzard’s team-based shooter. Exciting additions will include Hero reworks for Roadhog and Sombra, cinematic debuts, a lore codex, a new Control-based map, and more.

Overwatch 2 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
