Netflix has given fans a glimpse of its highly anticipated live-action TV show adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. During Netflix’s Tudum event, a brief title reveal showcased the elements of Avatar with a mystical soundtrack playing in the background. The streaming platform also unveiled that the show is set to premiere in 2024. Accompanying the announcement were images of the cast, featuring Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Zuko.
This adaptation of Avatar has been in the works since 2018, aiming to bring the beloved anime franchise to life in a live-action format for the first time. Joining the already impressive cast are George Takei, Amber Midthunder, and Danny Pudi, among others. Showrunner Albert Kim expressed the team’s dedication to authenticity, stating, “Authenticity is what keeps us going, both in front of the camera and behind it.” With original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko initially attached as executive producers and showrunners but eventually parting ways with the Netflix production in 2020, the show continues to evolve under new leadership.
Aside from the live-action adaptation, fans can also look forward to a full animated feature film in 2025. Paramount and Nickelodeon have plans for three animated Avatar films in total.
