Naughty Dog has been pretty quiet on the gaming front this year, though the HBO series continues to be popular. According to Production List, filming for season 2 is scheduled to begin on January 7 next year.
Like the prior one, season 2 will be filmed in Canada. Production List has Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann returning as producers and writers. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey also return, presumably reprising their roles as Joel and Abby respectively.
What to expect from season 2 of The Last of Us
The upcoming season will be split into two parts. This makes sense for anyone familiar with The Last of Us Part 2. In a prior interview with Deadline, Mazin also discusses how the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes affected work. When it struck, they were in the middle of scriptwriting, but that had to be put on hold.
They had gotten pretty far already, and Mazin was able to “write and submit the first episode right before the deadline hit.” According to Mazin, the next season of The Last of Us is scheduled to air in 2025, though nothing is certain yet. Despite the setback, he still really wants “to try and get this show on the air when it’s supposed to be on the air.”
Mazin also gives hope that the series won’t end with the second season. There are already ideas being tossed around, and he is adamant that the “show will not end with Season 2 unless people don’t watch it and we’ll get canceled.”
Many franchise fans have also been waiting for the multiplayer counterpart of The Last of Us Part 2 to launch. For a while, it seemed like the project had been scrapped but Naughty Dog game director Vinit Agarwal has confirmed he’s still working on it.
