Filling the Squid-Shaped Hole: The Challenge in Squid Game, Until Squid Game 2 Arrives

Netflix Tudum 2023 delivered a mixed bag of news for fans eagerly awaiting the second season of the global sensation Squid Game. While a new teaser trailer was unveiled, details about the upcoming season remain shrouded in secrecy.

However, there was a glimmer of excitement with the announcement of Squid Game: The Challenge. This intriguing show takes the fictional reality TV concept from the series and turns it into a real-life competition. It was one of the most exciting reveals at Netflix Tudum 2023.

Fans won’t have to wait long for the real-life version of Squid Game. Squid Game: The Challenge is set to premiere in November 2023. However, for those who find that wait too agonizing, we have curated a list of eight gripping and intense dramas to watch in the meantime. You can check out the trailer for Squid Game: The Challenge below.

What do we know about Squid Game: The Challenge?

Similar to the fictional show within Squid Game itself, the reality TV spin-off will feature numerous participants facing increasingly difficult challenges, with contestants eliminated until only one victor remains. Hopefully, this real-life version will be much less deadly than its fictional counterpart. Reports of minor injuries and fainting spells during filming indicate that the show will be physically demanding.

This isn’t the first time Netflix has attempted a Squid Game-inspired reality show. The survival series Physical: 100 followed a similar format but lacked the branding associated with Squid Game, which may have hindered its success. With Squid Game: The Challenge, Netflix avoids this issue and appears to be strategically positioning it to capture the attention of both Squid Game fans and reality show enthusiasts.

What was announced about Squid Game season two?

Unfortunately, not much has been revealed about the second season, apart from the release of a new teaser trailer (shown above). The trailer confirms the return of familiar faces like Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-Hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo, alongside four new contestants: Yim Si-Wan, a popular pop star and actor; Kang Ha-Neul, a well-known figure in K-dramas; Park Sung-Hoon, a versatile movie and TV star; and Yang Dong-Geun, a producer, rapper, singer-songwriter, and breakdancer.

Netflix has chosen to keep the plot and release date under wraps, with the trailer indicating a 2024 timeline. It seems that Squid Game: The Challenge will be the only dose of Squid Game fans will get in 2023. For those craving Korean dystopian drama this year, they’ll have to stick with the original series.
