Explanation of the Family Tree in Season 3 of ‘The Righteous Gemstones’

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 5 of the hit comedy show The Righteous Gemstones.

As we dive deep into Season 3 of The Righteous Gemstones on Max, the already extensive Gemstone family has welcomed some new additions. Now is the perfect time to trace the lineage of the megachurch members with a family tree, starting with patriarch Dr. Eli Gemstone and his late wife, Aimee-Leigh Gemstone, and their three children: Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin. Let’s explore the family tree, including the in-laws and new siblings introduced in Season 3 so far. With Gemstones and new relatives showing up everywhere, here’s your definitive guide to the megachurch family.

Dr. Eli Gemstone and Aimee-Leigh Gemstone
For clarity, we acknowledge Roy Gemstone, also known as “Grandaddy Roy,” as the first documented Gemstone ancestor. However, our family tree begins with his son Eli and Eli’s late wife, Aimee-Leigh. Eli is an accomplished author and the lead pastor of the Gemstone Salvation Center. He is a charismatic Southern man who has amassed a large following through his persuasive speech and ability to cater to his congregation’s desires. Despite his questionable moral priorities favoring wealth and material possessions, he remains the backbone of the family, even as his children attempt to challenge his authority within his own organization. Aimee-Leigh, who passed away a year before the show begins, is remembered as a devoted wife with an angelic voice, and her children—Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin—still carry the weight of their loss.

The Gemstone Children: Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin
Eli and Aimee-Leigh had three children. The eldest is Jesse—a bold and irreverent personality who frequently leads his siblings into trouble. Portrayed by Danny McBride, who also created the show, Jesse’s larger-than-life character embodies the boisterous alpha Gemstone. Judy, the middle child, exhibits typical middle child behavior. Being the only daughter of Eli and Aimee-Leigh, she is outspoken and prone to impulsive and reckless actions. Judy’s unpredictability and colorful personality add a unique element to the Gemstone family dynamics. Then there’s Kelvin, the youngest sibling, who struggles with his role and seeks his father’s attention through extravagant ministries and outreach missions. His journey to find his place within the family is central to his character development.

Baby Billy and May-May
Walton Goggins portrays the hilarious Baby Billy Freeman, Eli’s brother-in-law and uncle to Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin. A former child star, Billy wrestles with maintaining relevance in the entertainment industry. His unwavering quest for the spotlight often clashes with the Gemstone family’s sensibilities, as seen in his persistent pitch for “Baby Billy’s Bible Bonkers” game show. Baby Billy is married to Tiffany Freeman, a much younger woman and mother of Billy’s child, who struggles to connect with the Gemstones. May-May Montgomery, Eli’s younger sister, is a blood relative aunt to the Gemstone children. In a flashback scene, she attacks Aimee-Leigh but gets hit by a car before she can harm her. May-May has always resented Eli’s success and views his ministry and televangelism empire as fraudulent. She is the mother of Eli’s nephews Chuck and Karl and has recently reunited with them after their escape from a militia cult led by their father, Peter Montgomery, May-May’s ex-husband.

The Gemstone Children’s Spouses: Amber and BJ
Both Jesse and Judy are married. Jesse’s wife is Amber Gemstone, portrayed by Cassidy Freeman. Amber constantly encourages Jesse to assert his dominance within the Gemstone Salvation Center. She plays a strong role in supporting the alpha son of the family while dealing with his questionable actions. Jesse and Amber have three children, Gideon, Pontius, and Abraham. BJ, also known as Benjamin Jason Barnes, is Judy Gemstone’s fiancé turned husband, played by Tim Baltz. BJ is soft-spoken and sometimes naive to Judy’s erratic behavior but loves her unconditionally. He works as an optometrist, a fitting profession for his unassuming nature. BJ adds a moral compass to the Gemstone family gatherings.

More Gemstones to Come?
It’s remarkable that it took three seasons to introduce May-May, a sibling looking to make a statement or seek financial assistance from Eli. Kristen Johnston has brought a delightful flavor to the show, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see other “long-lost relatives” unveiled in future episodes. The Righteous Gemstones continues to air new episodes every Sunday on Max.
