Expanding High Speed Internet in Nevada | Features

Sky Fiber Internet has been around for more than 20 years. They’re a high-speed internet service stretching throughout Nevada, and now a Sky Fiber Internet Infrastructure is being placed in Virginia City.

Brian Mitchell, the Director of the Governor’s Office of Science Innovation and Technology says this project is a part of the High-Speed Nevada Initiative, connecting all Nevadans to high-speed internet.

Mitchell says Nevada has a number of underserved communities they’re currently working on getting high speed internet to. Virginia City was one of them.

“The first phase of the project is building what we call trunk lines or long distance lines, middle mile lines to different areas, to different cities or different towns that have a need for better internet,” he said. “In a later phase we’ll be building residential connection and individual residences and homes so people can have faster internet.”

He tells us, for residents in Virginia City, this project will help with overall internet connection, helping with work if you work from home, calls or other internet access.

“The High-Speed Nevada Project of the High-Speed Nevada initiative is all about making sure all residents in the state have access to high-speed internet, so this project is part of the first phase of building the internet infrastructure that we need in order for everyone to have a fast reliable internet connection.”

Brady Chambers, the COO of Sky Fiber Internet says they service most of Northern Nevada all the way from Lake Tahoe to Elko and south from Smith Valley to Yerington.

As for a timeline for the project Chambers tells us “This specific phase, we’ll be going up 6 Mile Canyon for the next 2 months and then the entire project we’re building about 150 miles of fiber across this part of Nevada so the entire project we’re looking towards the final quarter of 2026.”

“This project is really exciting for Nevada just because we have had such a big struggle with good internet,” he added. “So this is all about bridging the digital divide, making sure that people who live in remote areas In Nevada have good connection and good internet to be able to do school or work from home and have a productive life.”
