Everything you need to know about the deployment of police robots at Singapore airport

The adoption of autonomous police robots is gradually gaining momentum. The New York Police Department (NYPD) recently announced its plans to use these robots for city patrol, and now Singapore has revealed its use of autonomous robots to patrol Changi airport. According to a report by The Straits Times, these robots are equipped with cameras, sensors, and sirens among other features. Singapore has been conducting trial runs with these robots for the past five years.

The report highlights that the robots have an extendable mast that reaches up to 2.3 meters, while their standard height is around five feet and seven inches. Additionally, they are equipped with multiple cameras, providing a 360-degree vision field that allows police officers to gain a clear overview of the ground situation during operations.

These robots are equipped with built-in speakers for communication between police officers and passengers, and they also have microphones for passengers to interact with human police officers if they require assistance. Superintendent Lim Ke Wei, from the Airport Police Division, stated, “These patrol robots operate autonomously alongside our officers, providing additional eyes and support on the ground. The integration of robotics enhances the operational efficiency and capabilities of our frontline officers, enabling them to be more effective in their duties.”

Singapore has been experimenting with patrol robots since 2018, with trials conducted at locations such as the Marina Bay Sands area. Apart from patrolling, Singapore has also implemented robotic technology for other purposes at Changi airport, including robotic grass cutters for landscaping and a robotic traffic cop for the parking area.
