Ensuring Your Privacy: How iCloud by Apple Provides Assistance

During a recent interview on John Gruber’s The Talk Show podcast post-WWDC, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, emphasized that “privacy is a fundamental human right.” This echoes Apple’s longstanding commitment to privacy, which was famously championed by Steve Jobs, who defined it as people knowing what they’re signing up for in plain English. Apple’s ‘Privacy. That’s iPhone’ ad campaign also highlights the company’s focus on privacy.

Apple has designed nearly every product and service with privacy in mind, considering the technology landscape that often requires users to compromise their personal privacy for the sake of ads or reselling personal data. While Apple is not perfect 100% of the time, their privacy initiatives are impressive, and most Apple users have an Apple ID and use iCloud to back up and sync their data.

Here are six ways Apple users can leverage their Apple ID and iCloud to protect their privacy:

1. Sign in with Apple: Instead of using third-party single sign-on services like Google or Facebook, which can compromise your privacy, Sign in with Apple creates an account for you with a third-party service using your Apple ID for authentication and security, without sharing your email address.

2. Hide my Email: Available to iCloud+ subscribers, Hide My Email enables you to generate disposable email aliases that forward to your iCloud email address, protecting you from ad networks that use emails as a simple identifier to track you across the internet.

3. Private Relay: Another iCloud+ feature, Private Relay encrypts your Safari web traffic and relays it in a way that ensures no one, not even Apple, can see both who you are and what website you are visiting, making it more private than VPNs.

4. HomeKit Secure Video: Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video (HSV) protects your smart home security camera footage by processing and encrypting it on your device and sending the encrypted data to Apple’s servers for storage. With HSV, Apple nor any third party will ever see or access your footage.

5. Advanced Data Protection: Protects your data using end-to-end encryption, ensuring that all your iCloud data, including files, notes, and reminders, is secure from unauthorized access.

6. Private Listening: Apple Music offers private listening, which makes sure that your music player stops playing automatically if you remove your AirPods or Beats headphones.

While these features are not perfect, they represent Apple’s ongoing commitment to user privacy.
