The Primetime Emmy Awards are set to be postponed due to the ongoing strikes led by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA in the United States. As reported by Variety, vendors have been informed that the awards, originally scheduled for September 18, will no longer take place on that date.
The Television Academy and cable network Fox, who will be broadcasting the 75th edition of the award ceremony that recognizes the best talent in television and streaming, have yet to officially announce the changes.
This marks the first time in twenty years that the Emmys have been rescheduled. In 2001, the ceremony was delayed by two months in response to the September 11 terror attacks.
During the 2020 pandemic, the awards were held in a hybrid format. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel from LA’s Staples Center, the nominees joined remotely from their homes and various locations.
Approximately 65,000 actors, the majority of whom earn less than $27,000 (about Rs. 22 lakh) per year from their screen work, along with 11,500 screenwriters, are currently on strike. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (SAG-AFTRA) called for the joint strike after failing to reach a consensus on a new contract with studios and streaming services, represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
The WGA initiated the strike in early May, demanding improved wages, higher minimum pay, increased number of writers per show, and shorter exclusive contracts, among other demands. SAG-AFTRA joined the strike earlier this month.
