Managing a single job can be challenging, so it’s no surprise that Elon Musk’s schedule is complex and time-consuming as he juggles three high-profile roles as the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and previously at Twitter. During a discussion at The Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council Summit, Musk revealed that “there’s a great deal of context switching…switching context is quite painful.”
Musk tries to designate certain days as predominantly belonging to one company, but achieving this can prove difficult. He stated that Tuesday was typically a “Tesla day,” but that he could end up at Twitter late that night, leading to the following day being a mix between Tesla and Twitter. He also admitted that his roles at all of his companies are “somewhat intertwined,” and that managing his time is an extremely difficult task.
Musk typically stays up until 2 a.m. to manage his schedule by himself, but he also has a part-time assistant to assist him. His decision to remain the CEO at both Tesla and SpaceX, as well as his acquisition of Twitter, was a personal choice. He also founded The Boring Company in 2016, aimed at underground high-speed transport systems, and founded Neuralink in the same year to develop implantable brain-computer interfaces.
In 2015, Musk co-founded OpenAI, a generative AI startup that found success with its ChatGPT chatbot but is no longer involved with it. Given his enthusiasm for AI these days, it wouldn’t be surprising if he launched another business in the same field while dedicating less time to his other ventures.
