The Bad Bunny starring Sony Marvel film El Muerto is facing potential trouble as it has been removed from the release schedule.
Sony is reorganizing its release dates, and as a result, the future of one of the most puzzling Sony Marvel movies, El Muerto, is uncertain. Originally slated for a January 12, 2024 release, there has been little progress besides the announcement that Jonás Cuaron would direct and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer would write. With time running out and the ongoing strike, it’s no surprise that a film yet to be cast has been taken off the schedule, according to Variety. Meanwhile, Dumb Money, a movie based on the Gamestop stock incident, has been rescheduled from October 20th to September 22nd, and The Book of Clarence has moved to El Muerto’s previous January 12, 2024 date. It remains unclear if El Muerto is only delayed or canceled entirely.

During CinemaCon 2022, Sony Pictures announced its plans to bring the Marvel character El Muerto to the big screen. This character may be unfamiliar to many, even hardcore Marvel fans, as he has only appeared in two issues. It almost seems like a joke, but Sony confirmed that music artist Bad Bunny would play the lead role.
El Muerto represents Sony Pictures’ ongoing effort to adapt lesser-known Marvel characters for the silver screen. While the studio has been working to bring characters like Kraven the Hunter to life (with success in the form of Venom), they are also venturing into characters like Madame Web. The advantage of these obscure characters is the creative freedom they offer to those behind the projects. In the case of El Muerto, it’s a blank slate for the adaptation of a Marvel character, unlike anything we’ve seen before.
