Easter Eggs Revealed in Episode 2 of ‘Secret Invasion’

Editor’s Note: The following article delves into the spoilers of Episode 2 of Secret Invasion, the latest Marvel Studios / Disney+ series. Titled “Promises,” this episode is packed with references. Headlined by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Secret Invasion revolves around the theme of uncovering hidden truths. Here’s a breakdown of the key details you may have overlooked.

In a 90s flashback, we witness a meeting between Nick Fury (with both eyes intact) and the Skrulls, immediately following the events of Captain Marvel. This interaction reveals the deal Fury struck with the Skrulls. “You keep your word; I’ll keep mine,” he says. In exchange for their protection on Earth, Fury and Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) commit to finding the Skrulls a new home planet. Among the Skrulls pledging their loyalty to Fury is a young Gravik (played by Kingsley Ben-Adir), possibly one of the first to be betrayed.

Gravik encounters a secretive council of Skrulls, demanding their submission. Notable figures in this council include U.K. Prime Minister Pamela Lawton (Anna Madeley), FXN pundit Chris Stearns (Christopher McDonald), and NATO Secretary General Caspani (Giampiero Judica). Two unidentified Skrulls, Jack Hyuk-Bin (Christopher Goh) and Shirley Sagar (Seeta Indrani), also hold positions on the council. However, Shirley Sagar refuses to submit to Gravik’s authority.

When questioned about the potential threat from the Avengers, Gravik confidently assures the Skrull council that he has accounted for it. This not only hints at the absence of the Avengers but also suggests the possibility of a Skrull operative within the superhero team.

Talos reveals to Fury that one million Skrull survivors, who were previously attacked by the Kree, have been living on Earth. This revelation expands the scope of the secret invasion beyond Fury’s initial understanding. Talos also mentions Emperor Drogge, hinting at a connection to the Marvel Comics character Dro’ge, who played a significant role in the Secret Invasion comic storyline.

During a conversation with Colonel Rhodes (played by Don Cheadle), Fury references Captain America: The Winter Soldier and mentions Alexander Pierce. This alludes to the existence of a hidden Hydra faction and highlights the mistrust that has plagued Fury for years.

The events of Iron Man 3, particularly the Extremis program, come into play. G’iah (played by Emilia Clarke) accesses files related to Rosa’s work in New Skrullos and discovers references to Extremis. This genetic modification program, developed by Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall), could pose a significant threat in the hands of the Skrull Resistance.

Among the DNA samples obtained by the Skrull Resistance, a species designated “Flora Colossus” (Groot) stands out. The origin of these samples can be narrowed down to either Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame, hinting at the potential infiltration of Wakanda or the Avengers Compound by Skrulls.

A Frost Beast sample from Thor: The Dark World has made its way into the possession of the Skrulls, suggesting that remnants of this battle were left unattended.

Cull Obsidian, a member of the Black Order, is listed as having an unknown origin. However, it is known that Wong severed his hand during the battle in Avengers: Infinity War, leading to the Skrulls obtaining a sample.

In a surprising twist, Fury is revealed to have a Skrull wife. As he enters a hidden home, he is greeted by his wife, who appears as a human. The nature of their relationship and Fury’s awareness of her true identity remain uncertain.
