The highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has just announced its release window at the Summer Game Fest event. Square Enix dropped a gameplay trailer that showcased some key plot beats, revealing that our beloved heroes will continue exploring the wider world outside Midgar in the second entry of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project. The game is set to be released in early 2024, sticking to the timeline initially set by producer Yoshinori Kitase. The physical edition of the game will come in two discs on the PS5, indicating its hefty size.
The trailer for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth begins with a news broadcast of our heroes apparently dead and getting carried around on stretchers, after escaping the wreckage at the Midgar Expressway in the first game. Cloud Strife, the former SOLDIER, pushes open the door to the quaint village of Kalm, blooming with greenery and flowers, outside Midgar. Red XIII warns Aerith that appearances can be deceiving, saying, “It may look that way, but in reality, it’s barely hanging on.” Naoki Hamaguchi, the game director, hinted earlier this week that the sequel would offer a ‘high degree of freedom,’ demonstrated by our heroes travelling on chocobos and exploring large plains on foot.
In the meantime, Tifa wonders what Cloud has been up to in the past five years. She informs Aerith that, in reference to a devastating incident that occurred in the mountain village Nibelheim long before the start of the game’s events,“this is going to sound crazy, but as far as I know, Cloud was never in Nibelheim, five years ago.” The silver-haired antagonist Sephiroth has returned with a vengeance after having bested our heroes at the end of Final Fantasy VII Remake. The FF7 Remake trilogy will likely continue messing with the original timeline of events.
The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth trailer also offered an in-depth look at the combat system, highlighting the return of the Turks task force and the ability to play as Red XIII. Cloud unloads a barrage of strong slashes, juggling around enemies and synergising attacks with his party members, which includes Yuffi from the Intergrade DLC. Despite this remake project’s division into three parts, co-director Motomu Toriyama confirmed that the sequel was developed with ‘preparations’ so that new players could jump in without prior context.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is set to be released in early 2024 on the PS5. Don’t miss it!
