Dreams Creators Now Free to Utilize Their Creations for Personal and Commercial Purposes Beyond the Game

Media Molecule recently made updates to the content usage terms for Dreams, granting creators the ability to use their creations for personal and commercial purposes outside of the game.

In a post on the official blog of the studio, the most recent update for Dreams on PlayStation platforms was detailed. The post also mentioned that creators now have the freedom to use their created content outside of the game. However, it is important to note that this provision does not apply to all content, and creators will still need to seek permission from other creators whose content is being used for personal or commercial purposes.

“As we approach the end of Dreams’ live service later this year, we are excited to reach a point where creators can utilize their content created in Dreams beyond the game for personal use,” the team stated. “While this may not cover all content, our updated Dreams Content Usage Terms now allow for the use of music, animation, films, and art created in Dreams for personal and commercial purposes outside of the game.”

Players must download and install the latest Dreams update and agree to the updated usage terms in order to use created content within Dreams for both personal and commercial purposes.

In addition to the blog post, Media Molecule has also updated the content usage FAQ, which provides details on what content can be used and whether permission from other creators is required. Regarding the use of content from another creator, the FAQ states:

“You may only use another creator’s content for your intended purpose if you have obtained their consent. Just like the creations you make in Dreams, each user has their own intellectual property rights in their creations. This means that using someone’s creation outside of Dreams without their permission may infringe upon their intellectual property rights.”

This update to the usage terms is an interesting development, and it will be fascinating to see how Dreams content is utilized for commercial purposes.

Dreams was launched in 2020, and as previously mentioned, support for the game will come to an end this September as the team shifts its focus to a new project. Here is an excerpt from our launch review of the creation game:

“Dreams is still in its early stages, and I anticipate that it will take several months to fully realize its potential. However, even shortly after its official release, there are already numerous Dreams that give me hope for the platform. The development of multiplayer and PlayStation VR support is underway and expected to arrive sooner rather than later. This is a creative platform that I hope will endure and even make its way to next-generation consoles. If you’ve had a brilliant idea for a game, stop dreaming about it and start creating it in Dreams.”
