Dota 2 patch notes outline 7.34 update, but it’s in emojis

It’s common knowledge that Dota 2 is a rather intricate game – for League of Legends players, it’s like playing LoL on steroids. But just when you thought this MOBA couldn’t get any more complex, Valve surprises us with the latest patch notes for Dota 2’s 7.34 update, and they’re completely written in emojis! Yes, you read that right.

Dota 2 patch notes are notoriously lengthy, so Valve has decided to make things a bit easier by presenting patch 7.34 in emojis. I’m deadly serious, folks.

In a Steam post titled ‘Emojis in the Dark’ published on August 8th (possibly referencing ‘Whispers in the Dark’), an anonymous sleuth named ‘E.W’ reveals, “Hey, everyone. I don’t have much time. I snuck into Valve and managed to grab the complete patch notes for 7.34, and I’m posting them for everyone to read.” The plot thickens.

“But I think something went wrong with my copy-paste, because it’s all in emoticons. Anyway, so long as you can read emoji, you should be okay.” From here, the post descends into this ancient, long-forgotten tongue, indecipherable to anyone who doesn’t spend all their free time on Twitter. It’s like colorful hieroglyphics – what does it all mean?

Fortunately, the developers have provided us with a translation. For instance, the first line actually means “reworked captains mode draft order,” and when compared with the emojis, it starts to make sense (hopefully).

The patch notes are quite extensive and can be found here in written form. My personal highlights include the Muerta buffs, which grant her an additional revenant if a hero dies within The Calling, now requiring less mana.

However, it’s worth going through them to match the actual changes with the emoticons because some of the emojis representing heroes and talents are simply amazing. My personal favorites include Hoodwink, who is literally depicted as a squirrel, and his ‘Scurry’ emojis, which show a squirrel with a wind trail behind it.

As someone who goes through loads of patch notes for a living, I find this both refreshing and genuinely amusing. I applaud the creativity, and I’m thrilled by the enthusiasm Valve is injecting into Dota following the New Frontiers update. Dota is definitely making a comeback.
