Disney’s Latest Dud Eying a Whole Genre’s Worst Box Office in 20 Years

Disney’s ongoing efforts to transform its beloved theme park attractions into successful movies have been a long-standing trend, starting long before the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. However, while Pirates has managed to stay afloat at the box office, the same cannot be said for other attempts like Haunted Mansion, which has failed to make a mark.

After a disappointing opening weekend that confirmed its status as another costly disappointment for Disney, things have gone from bad to worse in its second week. Facing new competition from Meg 2: The Trench and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Justin Simien’s revival of the Eddie Murphy vehicle suffered a staggering 63% drop, earning a meager $9 million and bringing its total to $42 million after 10 days in theaters.

At its current pace, Haunted Mansion is projected to earn around $60 to $65 million domestically, making it the worst-performing theme park movie since The Country Bears, which earned less than $17 million in the summer of 2002.

This performance is even worse than the $75 million earned by Murphy’s The Haunted Mansion two decades ago, as well as the infamous box office disaster Mission to Mars. Although Tomorrowland and Jungle Cruise also resulted in significant losses of at least $150 million each, Simien’s ill-timed film is not even in the same league as those two, which is cause for major concern given their similar budgets.

In short, it seems like we may be witnessing one of Disney’s biggest flops to date, for the second time this year…
