Disney’s Latest Blockbuster’s Director Stays Silent on Criticizing the Mouse

Director Justin Simien finds himself in a precarious position as Disney prepares to release the Haunted Mansion reboot next weekend. Not only has the industry come to a standstill, but the recent premiere of the film was also impacted. Instead of having the cast attend, the premiere featured performers dressed as beloved Disney characters in solidarity with picketers. This setback, coupled with the high budget of $157 million, doesn’t bode well for the horror comedy’s box office performance. Early projections indicate that it may follow the same underwhelming trajectory as the Eddie Murphy-led version released two decades ago, despite the increased ticket prices.

During a panel at Comic-Con, Simien was asked about projects stuck in development hell. Although he couldn’t explicitly mention Disney, he hinted at the challenges faced in the production of the stalled Star Wars series, Lando. He described the frustration of initial enthusiasm and excitement turning into hesitation and changes due to factors beyond his control.

“You have a bunch of great initial meetings and the people you meet with are genuinely excited, and then their bosses come into the picture. They’re not so sure or they were in a shareholder meeting or whatever goes on above our pay grade. And somewhere in the middle, it changes. [It becomes the] very thing we hired you to do, let’s not do that.”

If Haunted Mansion proves to be a success, it may pave the way for Simien to bring Lando to screens. However, the possibility remains uncertain at present.
