Discord’s bold endeavor to emulate Patreon, introducing innovative features

Discord has been buzzing with activity lately. From new additions to the Nitro subscription service to a revamped username format, there’s no shortage of updates. Now, the platform is taking things a step further by introducing new monetization methods for ‘Server Subscription’ subscribers.

‘Server Subscriptions’ are monthly subscriptions that support the creators and communities running Discord servers, offering exclusive perks and benefits behind a paywall. To enhance the value of this service, introduced by Discord in December of last year, several exciting features and benefits are being added over the upcoming months.

The first feature announced for the Server Subscription service is the Media Channels Beta. Media Channels are channels specifically designed for sharing subscription-only content like “exclusive memes and wallpapers.” This means that the content in Media Channels will be accessible only to subscribed members, resembling platforms such as Patreon. Additionally, server owners now have the ability to define and set the perks for different subscription tiers.

Creators will also have the opportunity to sell one-time digital products, ranging from recipe e-books to gaming guides and digital wallpapers, as “downloadables.” Furthermore, there will be an option to bundle a premium role with any downloadable, or users can choose to purchase them separately.

Finally, Discord is testing the rollout of a Server Shop, an all-in-one online shop where server owners and creators can sell their subscriptions, downloadables, and premium roles.

While these new features are undoubtedly beneficial for content creators and creatives looking to expand their online communities, it does raise concerns for those who primarily use Discord as a free gaming social media platform.
