The legendary Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy concluded with the highly-anticipated release of its latest installment in May. This emotionally-charged film showcased breathtaking superhero action while delving into Rocket’s captivating story and his intricate connection with the menacing High Evolutionary. Although audiences were led to believe that the High Evolutionary met his demise by the movie’s end, an intriguing deleted scene recently surfaced, revealing a different truth. Director James Gunn has now affirmed the scene’s canonicity.

James Gunn Confirms the Canonicity of the Deleted Scene

During the climactic action sequence of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” we witness Rocket making the decision not to kill the vulnerable High Evolutionary, who is trapped in a sinking ship during his final moments. Logically, one would assume that Rocket left the High Evolutionary to perish. However, the deleted scene portrays a surprising twist, as it shows that Rocket brought the High Evolutionary onboard planet Knowhere and imprisoned him.

This scene has the potential to alter the future trajectory of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. It opens doors for more villainous plots from the High Evolutionary and the return of our beloved Guardians. James Gunn himself has now confirmed this speculation surrounding the scene.

When a fan queried about the canonicity of the deleted scene, the director responded that he believes it is indeed canon. According to The Direct, James Gunn stated:

“I think it’s canon. It’s definitely canon that we see Drax saving him when they save the animals.”

With the High Evolutionary’s survival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially confirmed and the post-credits scene of GOTG 3 announcing Star-Lord’s return, the burning question now arises: how will this come to pass? “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” was intended to bid farewell to the Guardians, allowing them to embark on separate journeys at the movie’s conclusion. This film also served as a grand finale to James Gunn’s involvement with the franchise, as he transitions into his role as co-CEO of DC.
