One such filmmaker is John McTiernan, the director of “Die Hard” and a revered figure in the action genre.
While there is no denying the talent and prowess of the person behind Hollywood’s greatest-ever action epic, as well as “Predator,” “The Hunt for Red October,” “Die Hard with a Vengeance,” and “Last Action Hero,” it should be noted that McTiernan has not directed a film in two decades. During this time, he faced consecutive failures with the movies “Rollerball” and “Basic,” and even served time in prison for lying to the FBI, which led to his bankruptcy.
That being said, the 72-year-old did not shy away from expressing his strong disapproval of superhero movies at the recent Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (according to World of Reel). He openly voiced his utter contempt.
“I despise superhero movies. I believe they have a negative impact on society. However, they are just the result of an extraordinary phenomenon that has been unfolding for approximately 250 years: money has become the primary measure of visual representations in our current era.”
While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, it is worth noting that McTiernan and other Marvel critics, including Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Ridley Scott, Terry Gilliam, James Cameron, Oliver Stone, and Jane Campion, all share one commonality besides their disinterest in superhumans and costumes – they are all at least 68 years old. The implications of this fact are open to interpretation.
