Devon Sawa Alleges Non-Payment for His ‘Final Destination 5’ Cameo

Amidst the ongoing strike, actors in America are joining the writers on the picket line and expressing their grievances against studios for exploiting their employees. One such example is Devon Sawa, who claims that he was neither compensated nor informed about his surprise cameo appearance in Final Destination 5. Sawa, who led the franchise’s first installment as Alex Browning in 2000, had his old footage reused in the series’ finale.

The actor’s appearance in the film was unexpected for audiences, as it revealed that Final Destination 5 actually took place before and led directly to the events of the first film. However, Sawa revealed that the footage was used without his consent. In a now-deleted tweet, he stated, “I never got paid a cent for Final Destination 5. They didn’t even tell me I was in it when they invited me to the premiere. In the first contract for part one, there was a section that stated they owned the footage and could use it in the future. I assumed it was for press. I was wrong.” Sawa also clarified that his issue had nothing to do with the filmmakers, as he loved Final Destination 5 and all the films of the franchise.

This incident is part of the ongoing discussion surrounding studios’ ownership of actors’ footage and likeness, which has contributed to the current strike. Samuel L. Jackson recently voiced concerns about the use of his likeness through technologies like AI, emphasizing the importance of actors carefully reviewing and amending contracts to protect their rights. He warned that AI and deep fake technology could enable anyone to recreate an actor’s image at any age, even after their death. Jackson emphasized the need for viewers to be aware of these technologies to distinguish between genuine performances and digitally manipulated ones.

It’s Already Happening

The controversy surrounding the use of actors’ likenesses after their death is already a reality. DC’s The Flash faced backlash upon its release earlier this year when it featured a cameo from the late George Reeves as Superman. Reeves portrayed the iconic character in the Adventures of Superman television series between 1952 and 1958. Sadly, he took his own life in 1959 due, in part, to struggles finding work outside the Superman role.
