Developer Investigating Performance Issues as The Last of Us Part I’s PC Port Shows Poor Technical Shape

The highly anticipated release of The Last of Us Part I on PC has been met with a wave of negative Steam reviews. As of now, the game only has a 33 percent positive rating due to the numerous performance issues it has experienced since its launch. These issues include crashes, stuttering, poor optimization, and long loading times, greatly impacting the overall playability of the game.

Naughty Dog, the developer behind the game, has acknowledged these issues and stated that they are actively investigating them. They have reassured players that updates addressing these problems will be released in upcoming patches. It’s worth noting that prior to the game’s launch, media outlets and content creators were not provided with a press copy, which is unusual for Sony. Typically, review codes are distributed in advance to allow for reviews to be published before the game’s release.

The porting of The Last of Us Part I to PC was handled by Iron Galaxy, the same group responsible for the disappointing PC port of Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015. While they did a decent job with the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection in 2022, it seems that the port of TLOU was rushed, resulting in the performance issues players are now facing.

Players have reported various issues, including the time-consuming “Shader Building” process that causes random freezes. The game’s PC settings heavily rely on CPU usage, leading to micro stutters, and the graphics memory tends to max out at medium settings. Additionally, players have encountered crashes while idling in the main menu and loading screens during cutscenes.

One frustrated Steam user wrote about their experience with the game, noting that it utilized nearly 10GB of VRAM at maximum settings and crashed at the “BUILDING SHADERS” notification despite their powerful hardware. Steam Deck users have also reported issues, such as shaders taking an hour to build and the game running at 30fps on low-medium graphics settings. It’s important to mention that Steam’s refund policy only allows for two hours of playtime, making it difficult for players to fully experience the game before deciding to request a refund.

Unfortunately, poor game optimization has become a recurring issue for PC gamers, with titles like Gotham Knights and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty suffering from micro stutters even at the lowest settings. Hogwarts Legacy also requires shader building upon every launch, though it’s not as severe as other cases.

Despite being available on both Steam and Epic Games Store, it is advised to hold off on purchasing The Last of Us Part I on PC until performance patches are released to improve the overall gameplay experience.
