Qualcomm Technologies has introduced two innovative modem chipsets, namely Qualcomm 212S Modem and Qualcomm 9205S Modem, both equipped with satellite capability. These chipsets are designed for off-grid industrial applications that require standalone non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity or a combination of satellite and terrestrial networks. The modems empower IoT enterprises, developers, ODMs, and OEMs to access real-time information and insights for effective project management.
Qualcomm 212S Modem: An Overview
The Qualcomm 212S Modem caters specifically to stationary IoT devices, providing superior off-grid connectivity through satellite communication. Its ultra-low power consumption makes it ideal for remote, fixed locations, prolonging the lifespan of the devices. The modem can be utilized for tasks such as collecting telemetry and data from water and gas tanks, meters, and other infrastructure equipment. Moreover, it is well-suited for utility grid monitoring, early fire detection reporting, mining installations, and environmental management.
Being Qualcomm Technologies’ first IoT-NTN-only modem compliant with the 3GPP Release 17 standards for satellite communications, the Qualcomm 212S ensures cost efficiency by incorporating only essential features required for satellite communications.
Qualcomm 9205S Modem: An Overview
On the other hand, the Qualcomm 9205S Modem enables seamless connectivity to both cellular and satellite networks, ensuring comprehensive coverage for IoT devices. It incorporates GNSS technology to provide accurate location data. This modem is perfect for industrial applications that demand always-on, hybrid connectivity, like tracking shipping containers, agricultural equipment, livestock, and global fleet and freight for supply chain management.
Both the Qualcomm 212S and Qualcomm 9205S modems are compatible with the Qualcomm Aware Platform for NTN connectivity services and device management in remote areas or business projects relying on real-time data.
While the Qualcomm 9205S Modem is already available, the Qualcomm 212S Modem will be released later this year.
