Details on PlayStation State of Play Event Featuring Final Fantasy XVI Gameplay

Sony is set to host an exciting State of Play event this week, featuring the highly-anticipated game Final Fantasy XVI. PlayStation took to Twitter to confirm that fans can expect over 20 minutes of new gameplay from Square Enix’s dark fantasy masterpiece. The event will be broadcasted live on PlayStation’s official YouTube and Twitch channels on April 14 at 2:30am IST in India and April 13 at 2pm PT in the US. While it’s unclear whether there will be any new announcements, Sony surprised fans at the previous State of Play showcase by unveiling five new PS VR2 games. Final Fantasy XVI, which went gold last month, will be a PS5 exclusive.

Since Sony withdrew from E3 in 2019, these digital-only State of Play events have become PlayStation’s go-to platform for unveiling upcoming games. With E3 canceled this year, fans can only wonder what other surprises Sony has in store for its summer-time reveals.

Following a developmental setback due to COVID-19, Final Fantasy XVI has finally settled for a June release, exclusively on the PS5. The PC version, which was originally planned for an immediate release, has been delayed for optimization purposes. Producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed this in a Japanese PlayStation blog post, stating that the release date is still uncertain.

Set in the medieval-inspired world of Valisthea, Final Fantasy XVI puts players in control of warrior Clive Rosfield, First Shield of Rosaria. Clive must navigate the divided continents of Ash and Storm, battling against summonable monsters called Eikons. The depletion of the energy source known as aether has plunged the six royal factions into conflict, and it becomes the player’s task to restore balance by forming alliances with a rotating party of companions and conquering various regions. This installment of Final Fantasy breaks away from the franchise’s traditional turn-based combat system, embracing a more action-oriented and visually stunning approach.

In a recent interview, game director Hiroshi Takai revealed that Final Fantasy XVI will take approximately 70-80 hours to complete. However, the main story alone will last around 35 hours, with the inclusion of side content potentially doubling the gameplay time. Additionally, players can enjoy around 11 hours of cutscenes, excluding cinematic sequences during battles and side quests. Final Fantasy XVI also offers a New Game+ mode that allows players to carry over equipment and stats for a second playthrough with increased enemy difficulty.

Final Fantasy XVI will be released exclusively on the PS5 on June 22. Don’t forget to tune in to the State of Play event on April 14 at 2:30am IST in India and April 13 at 2pm PT in the US for an exclusive look at the game.
