Details on Elden Ring’s Ray Tracing Support Finally Arrive for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X

Patch 1.09 for Elden Ring has introduced the highly anticipated ray-tracing update, bringing enhanced visual effects to the game. This update is now available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. However, it’s important to note that the ray-tracing feature is currently limited to shadows and ambient occlusion, with no support for ray-traced reflections. Renowned Dark Souls modder Lance McDonald has confirmed these details.

While the game’s settings menu does include a ray-tracing toggle, players won’t find options for Nvidia DLSS or AMD’s upscaling options to improve framerates on high-fidelity graphics settings. The visible changes from the ray-tracing update are mostly noticeable outdoors, as it removes the glowy edges on nearby rocks.

In terms of the update’s file size, the PS5 version is larger, requiring a 5GB download, while the PC update is only 200MB. This difference can be attributed to the inclusion of precompiled shaders in the PS5 version, which allow for immediate usage after installation. On PC, however, Elden Ring needs to compile and install shaders during the first launch after downloading the update. Although this is a common occurrence with modern PC games, it is significantly less taxing compared to the shader compilation process of Hogwarts Legacy on PC, which happens with each launch.

FromSoftware is aware of the absence of upscaling options and has accordingly listed 1080p resolution as the recommended limit in the system requirements. Going beyond this resolution may result in a potential decrease in performance.

To provide clarity on the ray-tracing system requirements for Elden Ring, publisher Bandai Namco has shared the following details:

Elden Ring Minimum Ray Tracing PC Requirements:
– Operating System: Windows 10
– Processor (CPU): Intel Core i5-10600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT
– Graphics (GPU): Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (8GB) or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT (12GB)
– RAM: 16GB
– Resolution: 1,920×1,080 pixels at Low quality – Low Ray Tracing

Elden Ring Recommended Ray Tracing PC Requirements:
– Operating System: Windows 11
– Processor (CPU): Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT
– Graphics (GPU): Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti (8GB) or AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT (16GB)
– RAM: 16GB
– Resolution: 1,920×1,080 pixels at High quality – High Ray Tracing

Patch 1.09 for Elden Ring also includes various balance adjustments to the game, ranging from online PvP scaling to changes in several Ashes of War. The complete patch log can be found on the official Bandai Namco website.

Additionally, Bandai Namco recently shared an interesting infographic, revealing that players have collectively died over 9 billion times in Elden Ring since its release. The infographic highlights damage from enemies, falls to death, status effects, and online PvP as the main causes of death. It also mentions that players have attempted boss battles nearly 6 billion times, with Malenia, Blade of Miquella being the most challenging boss.

In celebration of its one-year anniversary, FromSoftware announced the first major expansion for Elden Ring called “Shadow of the Erdtree,” currently in development for all platforms. A teaser art featuring a mysterious blonde figure riding a steed named Torrent was also unveiled. The figure appears to be Miquella, the sibling of the Empyrian goddess Malenia, who was cursed to remain a child forever. Last month, Bandai Namco confirmed that Elden Ring has sold over 20 million copies since its launch in February 2022.

Elden Ring is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. However, the ray-tracing update is exclusive to the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X versions.
