Details on EA Delisting Battlefield 1943, Bad Company 1 and 2 from Online Stores in April

Electronic Arts (EA) is set to permanently remove three classic Battlefield games from its digital storefronts. Beginning on April 28, players will no longer be able to purchase Battlefield 1943, Battlefield: Bad Company, and Bad Company 2. This move is in anticipation of EA retiring online services for these titles on December 8. However, players will still have access to the offline campaign features in Bad Company 1 and 2 after that date. It’s worth noting that an earlier statement mistakenly included Mirror’s Edge in the removal list, but EA clarified that it was an error and only the Battlefield games are being delisted.

One interesting aspect of this digital removal is that it highlights the advantages of physical media over digital. The multiplayer-only Battlefield 1943 was exclusively released on PS3 and Xbox 360 and will no longer be available for purchase digitally. This serves as a reminder that physical copies can still be enjoyed even after online services are discontinued. The game allowed up to 24 players to assume the roles of Marines or the Imperial Japanese Navy, engaging in World War II battles through its acclaimed Conquest mode.

In contrast, both Bad Company games offered both single-player and multiplayer modes, and they marked the introduction of the Frostbite Engine. It’s worth mentioning that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is also available on PC and can be accessed for free with an EA Play subscription. EA expressed its sentiments regarding these titles, stating, “While these games hold a special place in our hearts, we’re looking forward to creating new memories with you as we shift our focus to our current and future Battlefield experiences.”

Although these games may not have been popular in 2023, their removal is disheartening for many fans, especially considering that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was a crucial entry point for numerous franchise enthusiasts. EA has been making several decisions in the gaming industry lately, including the shutdown of Apex Legends Mobile due to concerns about the quality, quantity, and pace of content development. Additionally, the company halted the development of the Battlefield mobile game.

Meanwhile, Sony plans to shut down its 19-game PlayStation Plus Collection by May, urging PS5 owners to claim the free PS4 titles before May 9. Nintendo also announced that it will stop allowing digital purchases for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platforms starting March 27.

On a brighter note, EA recently established a new studio called Ridgeline Games in Seattle. Led by Marcus Lehto, co-creator of the Halo franchise, the studio comprises industry veterans and has been tasked with creating a compelling campaign experience within the Battlefield universe. This move comes after EA’s commitment to building a campaign-focused team for Battlefield, with Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn Entertainment, overseeing the series to develop a “connected Battlefield universe.”

To recap, Battlefield 1943, Battlefield: Bad Company, and Bad Company 2 will no longer be available on EA’s digital storefronts from April 28.
