Details of PM Modi launching Google Cloud-powered e-commerce app for cooperatives

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced an innovative e-commerce application designed specifically for cooperatives. This app, developed in partnership with Google Cloud and the National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI), aims to provide cooperatives with scalable and user-friendly technology that empowers them economically. The launch took place during the 17th Indian Cooperative Congress (ICC) held in New Delhi at the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) on July 1-2.
The ICC is the most prominent platform for the Indian Cooperative Movement, coinciding with International Cooperative Day.
The NCUI, as the apex organization of the cooperative movement in India, is responsible for education and training for over 8.5 lakh cooperatives in the country. It boasts a membership of over 30 crore people. The official statement mentioned that “NCUI was looking for a scalable platform like Google Cloud to host this e-commerce application for its users. The e-commerce platform was built on Google Cloud.”

Benefits of the app for cooperatives
This app enables cooperatives to sell their products across different geographical locations directly, bypassing intermediaries. It also provides training and support to cooperatives in areas such as onboarding on the platform, packaging, branding, and accessing government welfare schemes.
Dr. Sudhir Mahajan, the Chief Executive of NCUI, expressed his optimism about the partnership with Google Cloud. He said, “Powered by robust and scalable technology, the launch of the E-commerce application will enable Cooperatives and their members easy access to buy and sell their products to buyers across the country. We are positive our partnership with Google Cloud will enable us on our digital transformation journey and economically empower the Cooperatives.”
Additionally, this e-commerce app offers a platform for the cooperative community to sell their products and services to a wider audience. The partnership between Google Cloud and NCUI aims to promote economic growth, development, and create a level playing field for small cooperatives to compete in the market dominated by big players.
Bikram Singh Bedi, the Managing Director of Google Cloud India, highlighted that NCUI chose to work with Google Cloud due to its scalability, open-source technology, and collaborative approach. He stated, “We strongly believe that our partnership will provide NCUI with powerful technology solutions, which will help in the economic growth and empowerment of both the Cooperatives and their members.”
With the expected increase in the number of users and their demands over time, the scalability and open-standard cloud platform provided by Google Cloud make it an ideal choice for NCUI.
