The Impressive Success of Final Fantasy XVI
Square Enix recently unveiled that Final Fantasy XVI has already achieved a remarkable milestone of selling 3 million copies in both physical and digital formats. Although it falls slightly behind the initial sales of Final Fantasy XV, it’s important to recognize the significant differences between the two launches.

To start with, Final Fantasy XVI is currently exclusively available on PlayStation 5. According to the trailers leading up to its release, this exclusivity will continue for at least six months. In comparison, Final Fantasy XV was initially launched on both PlayStation and Xbox consoles, thus expanding its potential audience. It’s easy to imagine that Final Fantasy XVI would have witnessed even greater sales if it were available on other platforms.
Furthermore, the marketing strategies employed for the two games differed significantly. Prior to its release, Final Fantasy XV had an actual in-theater prequel movie starring Sean Bean, Lena Headey, and Aaron Paul. In contrast, a few weeks before the launch of Final Fantasy XVI, Producer Naoki Yoshida discussed the unique marketing approach for the new action-RPG. The latest entry in the series is expected to follow an 18-month sales plan, indicating that the company’s focus is not solely on short-term sales.
A Promising Future Ahead
Despite some challenges, Final Fantasy XV gained substantial popularity upon its release on PC. Its PC version featured integrated Steam Workshop mod support, and fans are hoping for a similar feature in the PC release of Final Fantasy XVI, if and when it becomes available.
As more and more players complete the game, positive word-of-mouth is generating additional excitement for Final Fantasy XVI. With its engaging action-RPG combat system and thrilling battles against colossal Eikons, the game serves as an excellent entry point for newcomers to the series.
While no DLC has been announced yet, previous Final Fantasy games have often received post-launch updates. We’ll have to wait and see if Final Fantasy XVI follows a similar path.
