Destructoid announces the arrival of the iconic GEX Trilogy on modern platforms

A Unique Twist: The Resurrection of the GEX Trilogy

During the Limited Run Games Showcase stream, the noteworthy physical publisher made an exciting announcement that they’re bringing back the beloved GEX series in the form of the GEX Trilogy. Prepare to be amazed and maybe a little apprehensive.

As with many surprise announcements, the trailer shown during the stream left us wanting more. If memory serves me right, the James Bond parody was a promotional tool for either the second or third game in the series. It seems our lizard protagonist had a knack for imitating cooler characters. However, one thing is clear from the trailer: the GEX Trilogy will be available on various current platforms, thanks to the Carbon Engine.

As soon as the news broke, my colleague Timothy “Toothpick-Fingers” Monbleau and I couldn’t help but reminisce about our shared memories with the GEX series. Timothy spent countless hours playing the first game on the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer, while I, as a kid, immersed myself in GEX 64. To be honest, none of the three games in the trilogy are terrible. If anything, the only annoyance back then was trying to comprehend the gecko’s witty one-liners. The first game featured side-scrolling gameplay, while the subsequent two embraced the collect-a-thon platformer genre.

Any port of these games is undoubtedly a win. I’ll confess – I will likely purchase a digital copy of the GEX Trilogy. Although I already own all three games individually (the first on Saturn and the other two on N64), I’m willing to invest to have them conveniently available in one place and support the preservation of gaming treasures.

The GEX Trilogy is confirmed for release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC in the not-too-distant future.
